Lack of diagnosis can also lead autistic females to have higher rates of depression, anxiety and self-esteem issues as they are left without a clear understanding as to why they do not "fit in" with their peers. Females on the spectrum also seem to have higher rates of eating disorders, such as anorexia, than other females. A 34- month- old boy rarely initiates eye contact with his mother and does not seem to engage in play with other children in his peer group at day care. At times, he behaves aggressively toward the other children. He is only minimally communicative with speech but, when vocal, is prone to repetitively use only single words.
